Robert W. Hughes

Mr. Hughes began his teaching career in the School District of Shorewood in 1994. He is the band director at both Atwater and Lake Bluff Elementary Schools, teaching beginner band in grades four, five and six. Prior to coming to Shorewood, he taught in northern and western Wisconsin for five years, where he taught high school, middle school, and elementary band, as well as choral and general music instruction.

As a trumpet performer, Mr. Hughes has shared his talents with many diverse musical groups including the Sheboygan Wuerl Band, the Sheboygan and Manitowoc Symphonies, the Dorf Kapelle German Brass Ensemble, the Northwinds Brass Ensemble, the Baraboo Community Band, the Milwaukee Festival City Brass, and the Lake Shore Wind Symphony. In addition, he was a featured solo performer with the Chequamegon Symphony, the Northern Lakes Arts Center, the Festival City Brass, and the Lake Shore Wind Symphony. Mr. Hughes has also performed with theater productions in northern Wisconsin, Baraboo, and Concordia University in Mequon.

Mr. Hughes attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, earning his bachelors degree in music education. While there, he studied trumpet with the late Allen K. Butcher. In 2009, Mr. Hughes completed his Master’s Degree in Music Education at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois, while studying trumpet with Dr. Leah Schuman.

Within the music community, Mr. Hughes is a member of the Wisconsin Bandmasters Association and the Music Educators National Conference. He has served as a Wisconsin School Music Association festival clinician and adjudicator throughout the state. In recognition of many years of dedication to his students, Mr. Hughes was honored as the 2011 Music Teacher of the Year by the Milwaukee Civic Music Association.
